Time to Train: January 7th-13th

Colorado School of Mines High School Winter Indoor Invitational this Saturday at 10 a.m.

I hope everyone has had a relaxing winter break. It has been great to see so many people out at our winter runs to get geared up for the start of the track season. Right now, we are about 5 weeks into the off-season, w/ 8 to go until our first race this spring. The first month of running has been pretty relaxed in order to give us a little bit of a mental break and to keep building base miles. The focus over the next 2 weeks is to get to our peak mileage by the end of next week. We will continue to focus on racking up mileage at this point and building a giant aerobic base that will help to carry you through the track season. We are also going to start getting into the weight room 2 days a week and focusing on core work after the runs 2 other days each week. This is to ensure that we are staying healthy as 0ur workload increases.

A few of you are ready to start going "the extra mile" again. Take a look at your mileage schedules. This will typically consist of 1 to 2 extra runs a week of 4 to 5 miles. These can be done on Sundays, before school, off periods, or any other time the run best fits into your schedule. I recommend not doing these the same day of the long run.

I really encourage everyone to stay determined and consistent through the winter months. The first race on March 2nd may seem like a long ways away, but it will be here before you know it. What you do during the winter months of December, January and February are what will define your track season this year. There is just no replacing off season base training.

The other thing I want to encourage everyone to do is continue to train as a TEAM. Between ski trips, after school activities, homework, appointments and 100 other things there will always be reasons we can come up with to miss a practice. There are also plenty of reasons to try and make excuses about training on our own. However, being in this together and training as a group each day is what will help keep you motivated and push all of us to be at our best.
